He took another drag of his cigarette. He did not want to admit that he had let down his lover. After all the years they'd known each other... Hell, he should have known, should have trusted her. She was a lot of things, but delusional was not one of them. He missed her now. But this time, it was over for good. Didn't matter. He loved her and would help make things right.
It hurt more than a little that she told him about the other man she met. Even though things didn't go anywhere between those two, he thought he would always be the only one, besides her husband, who had a special place in her heart. He shook his head, for he knew that her heart had always been too big for her own good. He wondered if his weren't big enough. Or was he scared. Maybe he just wanted to keep that special place. It was enough for him. He wished it were enough for her, but he knew better. Besides, she deserved more.
Another puff. He knew he would help her. Always had. Helping people was something that gave him pleasure anyway, but he wanted to make it up to her. Couldn't leave things like this.
